The Unexpected Gift of Red Lights

If you’re anything like me, getting stuck at a red light feels like a repetitive inconvenience that slows you down when you’re just trying to get from Point A to Point B. I’m no stranger to this struggle. In fact, living in Chester County, where stoplights along route 100 are as abundant as pizza shops, I constantly find myself at a red light. Even when I drive family and friends around the area, I am known as the “Red Light Girly”.

Many times, while I sit impatiently at a red light, I think: “Why am I always stuck at these lights? Why does this keep happening?” However, during the first week in January while I was of course sitting at a red light, I thought to myself that I was grateful to have the opportunity to sit at this light to pause, reflect, and appreciate moments I would’ve otherwise overlooked.

Here’s a few things I learned in this moment, and I hope they’ll help you too when you’re in these circumstances.

  1. A Moment to Breathe

Living in a fast-paced world, we rarely get opportunities to just stop. And, let’s be honest, it’s hard to give yourself permission to take a breather when you’re constantly on the go. But a red light? It forces you to stop, even if it’s just for a few seconds. I’ve started using that pause as a moment to inhale deeply, let go of any tension, and focus on the present.

It’s surprising how such a simple action can reset your energy, especially when your day has been busy or stressful. The world doesn’t stop, but for those 30 seconds to a minute, you get a little moment of stillness that can work wonders for your mental and emotional state.

  1. The Scenery of Chester County

I’ve lived in Chester County for years, and one thing is that the mix between urban and rural landscapes are beautiful. Whether it’s the lush open land or the busy streets, our county is stunning. When you’re driving along, it’s easy to rush past it all, focused on where you’re headed instead of where you are. But when you get stuck at a red light, you’re given a rare chance to look at the scenery around you.

The name of the day sign at the Coatesville Flower Shop, the silly signs at Parkway Cleaners in West Chester, or the sunset views while driving on Business Route 30 West… all of it waiting for you to take notice. It’s the simple things that often pass us by, but red lights slow us down enough to appreciate them. These moments help me feel connected to the place I call home.

  1. A Time for Reflection

There’s something about the stillness at a red light that invites introspection. When the world around me comes to a temporary stop, I find myself reflecting on the day, like what went well, what didn’t, and how I can move forward. I think about the small victories and the challenges, about what I’ve learned and how I can grow.

Without the distraction of constant motion, the red light becomes a tiny sanctuary for reflection. It’s as though the universe is reminding me to check in with myself, take a mental inventory, and recalibrate my thoughts. We often rush from one task to the next, and it’s easy to forget to pause and assess where we’re at. Those red lights require us to have a much-needed nudge.

  1. A Chance to Be Present

Life moves so fast, but the red light serves as a subtle reminder to be in the moment. Whether you’re enjoying the scenery or having a quiet moment with your thoughts, these pauses teach you to be present, to embrace the here and now. It’s easy to overlook life’s little moments when you’re always in a hurry, but when you’re forced to stop, you can’t help but notice the small, beautiful details that would otherwise pass you by.

The AHE staff is currently reading the book: Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, which has really helped me live in the present. The book reflects on the finite nature of our time, around 4,000 weeks if you live to be 80, and how we often feel overwhelmed by all we need to accomplish. The author encourages us to stop striving to do everything and instead focus on truly living in the moments we have. Much like being at a red light, it’s a reminder that time is limited, and it’s crucial to spend it mindfully.

  1. Gratitude for the Journey

Eventually, I stopped cursing those red lights. In the grand scheme of things, a few minutes spent at a red light is a tiny fraction of the time we have each day. Now when I get stuck at one, I try to think about how it is a sign to slow down and reset.

Living in Chester County, we may never fully escape red lights. But now, I’ve learned that sometimes, the pause is exactly what I need to help me get to where I’m truly going physically, mentally, and emotionally.

So, the next time you’re caught at a red light, I invite you to view it as the cup half full. Embrace it as a moment to breathe, reflect, appreciate, and be present. You might just find that these pauses add up to something much bigger than you expected.

Hope this little reflection helps you as much as it helped me 😊
