The Alliance for Health Equity (AHE) is thrilled to introduce Aiza Ashraf as the new Vice President of Impact and Programs! In her first month with us, Aiza dedicated her time to learning more about Coatesville, diving deep into AHE’s mission and exploring the rich history of the community. From attending local events to savoring the flavors at beloved spots like Deysi’s Pizza, Willy’s Family Restaurant, and King’s Tavern, she’s been actively engaging with the heart of Coatesville.
To learn more about Aiza’s vision and her dedication to advancing health equity, Alyssa Kotzmann, our Marketing and Communications Director, sat down with her for a revealing conversation. Dive into the interview below to discover Aiza’s insights and her commitment to making a meaningful impact in Greater Coatesville!
Alyssa: How long have you worked in the nonprofit world?
Aiza: I have more than ten years of experience working in the nonprofit sector, holding various leadership roles in both national and international organizations. Most recently, I served as the Director of Equity and Community Impact at United Way of Lancaster County, where I focused on advancing community initiatives and promoting equity.
Prior to that, I worked with international organizations, including the United States Institute of Peace (a policy think tank), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and the European Union Commission. These roles have equipped me with a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of the nonprofit landscape, enabling me to drive impactful change and contribute effectively to the missions of the organizations.
Alyssa: What relevant/unique experience you bring to AHE?
Aiza: I bring a unique blend of experience and skills in program design, impact analysis, monitoring and evaluation, community engagement, stakeholder consultation, governance, and grantmaking. My ability to translate strategic goals into actionable plans, combined with perseverance and humility, ensures I can effectively contribute to The Alliance for Health Equity’s mission.
I am deeply passionate about making a difference in the lives of historically disadvantaged and marginalized communities. This passion drives my commitment to issues of socioeconomic equity, with a particular focus on health equity. In today’s knowledge-based economy, developing human capital is essential for upward socioeconomic mobility, and this development is intrinsically linked to health equity. Ensuring that everyone has access to quality health care is not only a matter of justice but also a fundamental necessity for fostering sustainable communities.
What excites me most about being part of the AHE team is the opportunity to contribute to a mission that aligns deeply with my values. The work AHE does to foster a healthier and more equitable community in Greater Coatesville is incredibly inspiring. I am eager to contribute my expertise to support these efforts and drive impactful change in the community.
Alyssa: What are you looking to achieve for Greater Coatesville?
Aiza: My vision for Greater Coatesville is to create a truly equitable community where every individual, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, has the opportunity to succeed. I firmly believe this is the only way for the entire community to thrive and prosper. One key insight I gained from my previous professional experiences is that access to healthcare is influenced by prevailing socio-economic hierarchies. Addressing health disparities necessitates more than providing medical treatment; it also entails addressing the underlying social, economic, institutional, and environmental factors that perpetuate inequities.
My work will support the Greater Coatesville community in several tangible ways. One key area of focus will be empowering local organizations through capacity-building initiatives. By providing training, resources, and strategic guidance, we can enhance their ability to serve the community effectively. Strengthening these organizations will create a more robust support network for residents and foster a collaborative environment where innovative solutions can thrive. I aim to foster collaborations where community members and local organizations can come together to support and uplift historically marginalized segments of our community.
Additionally, in my current role, I am dedicated to including and amplifying the voices of community members in The Alliance’s programs and impact goals. This inclusive approach will build trust, encourage active participation, and ensure that our initiatives are truly responsive to the community’s needs. I believe, through these efforts, we can build a healthier, more equitable Greater Coatesville for all.
Alyssa: Lastly, what is something unique and interesting about you?
Aiza: I love to cook and try different cuisines. In my undergrad, I started my own small home-based bakery. I speak three languages and love to travel.
